How we calculate this →The calculation starts with your battery capacity in kWh and your state's residential electricity rate. A full charge cost is simply battery × rate: a 75 kWh Tesla at $0.17/kWh costs $12.75 per complete charge. Cost per mile follows from dividing the full charge cost by range — a 250-mile range makes each mile cost about 5.1 cents, before any charging losses.
Monthly cost scales with how many miles you actually drive. If you cover 1,000 miles a month, you need 1,000 ÷ 250 = 4 full-equivalent charges per month, using about 300 kWh. At the U.S. average rate that adds roughly $51 to your electricity bill.
A real Level 2 home charger (typically 7.2–11.5 kW) loses about 8–12% to heat during charging, so the wall-to-battery efficiency means you'll pull slightly more kWh from the wall than the battery actually stores. This calculator uses the usable battery kWh as the baseline, which slightly understates actual electricity consumption — for a precise bill estimate, add 10% to the monthly kWh figure.
