How we calculate this →The calculation follows the same power × time formula that underlies every electricity cost estimate. Daily energy consumption equals the heater's power rating (in watts) divided by 1,000 to convert to kilowatts, then multiplied by the number of hours it actively heats water per day. Cost is simply daily kWh times your electricity rate.
The key variable for tank-style heaters is active heating hours. An electric resistance water heater doesn't run continuously — it cycles on and off to maintain the set temperature (typically 120–140°F). A well-insulated 50-gallon tank for a family of four might run 2–4 hours per day under normal conditions. Higher hot water demand (more showers, laundry, dishwasher cycles) or a lower thermostat setpoint increases runtime; a well-insulated tank or a timer-controlled heater decreases it.
For heat pump water heaters (also called hybrid water heaters), we apply an efficiency factor of approximately 0.35 — meaning the heat pump uses only about 35% as much electricity as a conventional resistance element to deliver the same hot water. This reflects a typical Coefficient of Performance (COP) of roughly 2.9×, meaning the unit moves about 2.9 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity consumed. The exact COP varies with ambient air temperature and the model, but 2.5–3.5× is the typical real-world range for a modern heat pump water heater in a conditioned space.
Tankless (on-demand) electric water heaters have very high power ratings — typically 10,000–27,000 watts — but only run while hot water is actually flowing. The default of 2 hours per day reflects typical household hot water draw patterns. Because they heat only on demand with no standby losses, they can be efficient for households with intermittent demand, but their high peak draw requires a dedicated 240V circuit and, in some cases, an electrical panel upgrade.
